The Ankh sign is connected to the life to date and is the most famous symbol of ancient Egypt. Over time the ankh has come to symbolise eternal life and immortality to people from many walks of life. The word ankh also means “mirror” in the ancient Egyptian language, as in a mirror to the soul.
The gods and goddesses of ancient Egypt were often depicted carrying an ankh in their hands or holding out an ankh in a blessing and it was an important protective amulet used during the ritual of mummification. However, there is still some debate regarding the origin of the ankh. It may represent a sandal strap, a ceremonial girdle, male and female reproductive parts or depict the sun on the horizon casting a shadow before it.
